Description

The Eskdale Valley Away from the usual tourist haunts this is the Eskdale valley with the River Esk running thru it in Cumbria England. Behind and to the right would be the highest mountain range in England - Scafell Pike at 3210 feet. To the left you can see the hills known as Hardnott at 1802 feet.the Romans built a fort there....not a posting you would put your name down for is it.To the lower left of the picture you can see the stone structure of a sheep pen...about the only building for miles around here. My wife and I walked that ridge before descending into the valley for the return journey..one heck of a walk. But for peace and tranquillity this place is hard to beat.

A great shot of one of my favourite places, I took my children to the fort when the boys were young, they asked "Where are the soldiers" and " Was in demolished by Trebuchets" they loved wargames.

For another bit of history of the Roman fort,it has four exits one of which is a drop of about 1000 feet.It is debatable on whether this was for saying goodbye to unwanted visitors or merely the fact that Rome decided that all forts would be built in the same plan regardless of location and no one was going to question it :-)

Oh, this is so lovely. The sun on the hills and the shadows in the dales... that stone pen wall is incredible. I find joy in letting my eyes start at the front on the stream and rush along on the current, swinging from side to side out of sight and on to the mountains far in the distance. Fabulous! Absolutely a stellar shot!
