Description

Hello and thank you all for your wonderful comments on my posts and adding them to favouirtes too i really appriciate it thank you very much. I took these photo's at Durlston Park in Swanage, i had to take a photo of the infomation as my memory is not that good lol for those who are interested here's what it say s. This small family stone quarry or quarr is typical of the many hundreds which were active around Swanage in the last century. The shaft was dug deep into the hillside to extract the workable beds of Purbeck Limestone. Quarrying was once the mainstay of the Swanage economy with over 400 men employed in the industry by 1800. The stone was loaded underground onto a quarr cart which was pulled to the surface by a simple, donkey powered wince or capstan. The long connecting pole or spack provided the necessary leverage to haul the heavy stone blocks up the steep quarry slide. Any failure in this primitive system could send the cart hurtling back down the tunnel with fatal results. Dressed in warm moleskin waistcoats and trousers, men and boys, some only 10 years old, worked by the dim light of a tallow candle in the damp narrow underground lanes. Using only primitive hand tools hundred of tons of stone were dug from these quarries. The work was long and hard, and although simple pillars were constructed to shore up the roof, the danger of a roof fall was ever present.
