Oooh, what a potent emotional knot! Written and expressed so succinctly, it packs a wollop and touches on an experience similar to some we've all had...that of being alienated in the least alien of places. Nice work.

Last weekend I had a new water main put in from the street to my house, and a bit of plumbing, then, just inside the wall. I get it. Well done! That sense of being adrift in one's own home ... unsettling!
