Description

For all my cat-loving friends NIGHT CAT The picture is based on a photograph of Turvy, one of the second pair of cats who have lived with me. I made this picture shortly after learning from my ex-wife that he had died peacefully in his sleep after a long life. His death was in complete contrast to his beginnings … he was rescued from a pack of hounds by my ex-sister-in-law in the Lake District, United Kingdom. His mother and the rest of the litter perished in the jaws of the pack. The forty-odd brave mounted hunters and their large pack of hounds were [of course] really seeking to slaughter a much fiercer quarry - the notoriously fearsome and dangerous fox. They were not too worried, however, about the error since they considered ‘feral’ cats [ie domestic cats gone wild] to be ‘vermin’. Turvy came to live with us and a newly-acquired kitten called Topsy. Both kittens got on remarkably well, though as they got older it became clear that Turvy was very territorial, and Topsy was so easy-going that there was never any dispute. Turvy was also very nocturnal - he had his daytime hideaways which he would leave only at mealtimes. At night he was always out - hunting or guarding his territory. The local stray toms would avoid the house completely. Occasionally he would leave gifts on the back steps - mice, frogs, birds and once, even, a small bat - though heaven knows how he managed to catch that. Turvy was the epitome of cattishness - independent, feisty and affectionate on his own terms … wherever he is now, I’m certain he’s ‘on guard’ every night.

I love this story, and your image is stunning, this goes into my faves for sure!! At this very moment, there's a pit bull mix sitting on "his" couch right next to me. My son found him 9 years ago, in a burlap sack full of 5 others pups. 3 were dead, 3 alive, and Barger was one of the lucky ones. Some #@$@$$@@ thought he'd rid the world of these ferocious dogs by drowning them in the river. His kharma will come back to haunt him. In the meantime, I get Barger in the summer when my son works on the river, and couldn't be happier; he's the smartest, best dog I'eve ever known!! Turvy will be around for a while, those cat spirits are huge!!

Wonderful picture and story of Turvy. I believe he's at 'Rainbow Bridge' along with all pets, whatever they may be, awaiting their best friend's arrival. Got several there for me.
