Description

This tiny tortoise appeared in our back garden one fine day. The grass was just about to be mowed when my daughter spotted him. I thought it was a mushroom, until it grew legs and walked! He was immediately christened ‘Lucky’, in that the mower would have gone right over him for sure. Reserach revealed that he was a Cape angulate tortoise (Chersina angulata), a smallish tortoise usually confined to the Cape and southern Namibia. They are usually a reddish colour, particularly the plastron or breast-plate, which gave rise to the Afrikaans name of "Rooipens skilpad". Lucky stayed in our garden for another 3 or 4 months, until he passed away for some reason tortoises know best. Thanks for viewing and comments, Clive

We had a Lucky a couple of years ago until he disappeared in my 'jungle' backyard!! Very cute little fellow and a great capture my friend!

a very neat little tortoise, looking rather like a jewel-box.
