Description

What is it for then If not for breathing Life slows down Ever so gently Every breath we take Reminds us Of the mechanism of life First thing They hit you And there you go A lifetime Of gasping for air To keep us going Directionless Nowhere Sometimes Very rarely Our breath stops In front of beauty And Or Horror It may also falter In the process Of creating new Life At Times The breathing Is heavy When emotions Rule your head We inhale oxygen To stay here for a while We inhale marihuana To get the hell out of here If only for some Fleeting moments I still love the effortlessness Of the whole process Life What is it then for But to keep on Breathing ------------------------------------------------- Thank you so much for reading and any comments you might have! Have a GREAT sunday Dirk The image is one of my first computer drawings, produced back in 1991 with an Amiga 500, original size 320x240 pixels

The complexity, difficulty and paradoxical "effortlessness of the whole process" are some aspects of life that convince me to look up, my friend. Poignantly expressed and beautifully written, and the attending image reflects the grey haziness of life ebbing when breathing becomes cpompromised. May God be with you in your seemingly unrelenting journey, {{{{Dirk}}}}.

That's it exactly, Dirk. Just keep on breathing.

Dirk, You know, I admire you so much. You keep on keeping on in view of what you are facing. That takes courage. It would be easy to give in, I think. But I don't think that is your nature. One thing I want to say and this is just my opinion and personal belief and certainly I am not going to preach to you. To me, breathing is a process that enables us to go through life. There is a purpose for each of us that are here. It is up to each of us to find that purpose. Life is not black or white, there are indeed grey areas where we have mixed feelings. Your image reflects that. Lea

You're talented in so many ways, Dirk. Your poetry is as impressive as your artistic abilities. Your words are always right to the point and that's why they hit us deep inside. While listening to you we also learn more about ourselves. We look at life from a different point of view and that's a good thing. You're so strong even when you feel weak. Big warm hugs to you, my friend!

Fantastic and eloquent piece of writing! Great work on every level, especially the easy-going directness of it. Great piece of accompanying artwork as well. In short, I like this on multiple levels.

"Breathe on me, breath of God ... fill me with life anew" Well, if you don't believe you still have your own breath, one inspiration at a time, to give you time to live, however difficult the task. Plain words here are more eloquent than ornamented flights of fancy, and as always I admire your strength and brave philosophy. Mike

Great, Dirk. Ik kan weinig originele gedachten toevoegen aan mijn voorgangers. We ademen gewoon door zolang het kan, we moeten wel. Mooie woorden van je.

Undulating. THAT is the rhythm I felt when reading this, but found myself grappling for a description. I started.... soaking up your thoughts, when it struck me that this was bringing some undulating, nearly sound-like quality in my head...much as I often experience with some of your more mechanical XD's...where I can begin to almost literally hear an imagined, growing whir, a winding and cranking of gears, a soft hum, momentum. Just uncanny how similar I found the two! Breath. Have you ever thought of how the word itself has the capacity to conjure in the mind? One syllable, and not even in the category of onomatopoeia, yet it seems able to so heighten the senses. Yes, a slap to begin (and countless more along the way, of course...while we breathe in...breathe out...repeat), softness...raggedness...mindful deep cleansing breaths, to thoughtless sucked-in chest-catches...and everything imaginable in between. Even those moments, maybe especially those moments, that for no identifiable reason at all, you suddenly become keenly aware of its pattern and measure, its existence. I adore the streamlined impact of this one, Dirk. It's tender as tender can be, and sweetly cerebral. Purely crystalline words and thoughts, my sweet friend. It's all...ALL...but for breathing...(((Dirk))) And now, off to look up Amiga...

Breath... that very breath that enables us to continue, we take so much for granted. Ask the man (my brother)on oxygen, on breathing treatments, who struggles for each breath how precious it is to fill your lungs when you have but one and it is occluded. Ask the man (my brother who passed away) how precious it is to freely breathe when he is in the throes of uncontrollable coughing, aske about the panic of not being able to catch your breath. We take so much for granted. As I take a deep breath I thank God that I can, and I continue to breathe. My deepest compassion, Dirk.

WOW! You owned and worked with an Amiga? My first was a PCjr. But I never produced anything worth the powder to blow it to hell with! I love the poem. Such a strange function, breathing. Automatic mostly, yet often conciously done. Mostly unaware of it happening, "as natural as breathing", yet how often we use it to calm ourselves, taking deep slow long breaths of air into our lungs, letting it out slowly .. relieving tensions. Often the rythm of it lulls me to sleep. Yes, I guess that's what it is, we live to breathe .. we breathe to live.
