Actually, the appendages at 2:00 and 10:00 and also petals. Orchids generally have one of the three petals modified into what orchidists refer to as the lip. It can appear in many bizarre sizes and shapes among the 30,000+ species of orchids. Orchids generally have 3 petals and three sepals, one of the defining characteristics of the family Orchidaceae. In this flower the sepals are at 12:00, 3:00 and 9:00.
