Description

Red Rocket 4044 trundles westbound on the King Line (Route 504) enroute to Dundas West Subway Station on the Bloor-Danforth Subway Line. In the distance are the residences of Rosedale and Roncesvalles Village. In the background are the glass towers of Toronto's Financial District. Next stop, the Entertainment (or Theatre) District and the Royal Alexandra Theatre. Completed in 1907, this is the very same Royal Alexandra Theatre which was rescued and restored by Toronto philanthropist Ed Mirvish. The Alex had fallen on hard times starting from the 1940's on into the early '60's. This was largely the result of the dominance of the then 'golden age' of film and was followed up with the explosion of television. The Royal Alex could not compete. And like the Royal Alex, the Toronto streetcar network suffered a parallel decline due to the post war popularization of automobiles and suburban sprawl. But fortunately both assets to the city have enjoyed a monumental resurgence in recent decades. Mostly due to the efforts of proud Torontonians like Ed Mirvish. As you can see on the upper marquee, the Royal Alexandra is currently presenting the stage production of the '80's feature film Dirty Dancing. As if the original had not done enough harm to mankind. I hated that movie. It was predictable, silly and all too pinky. But the 'popular' girls gushed over it. Their reverence for the film was (and still is) as pathological as (US) Republicans' devotion to Ronald Reagan. The day I took this picture the surrounding streets were swarming with legions of Mary Kay Commandos. My views might be controversial and not very popular but, Nobody puts Baby in a corner. NOBODY! Enjoy. Note: TTC - Toronto Transit Commission CLRV - Canadian Light Rail Vehicle

great photo. As far as the movie Dirty Dancing goes I liked it, I don't think it was made to change the world, it was just for sheer entertainment, and Patrick Swayze can entertain me anytime. :)

Wonderful photo Clayton and like you I am always so thrilled when ever a effort is made to save such cherished places from our past. In our own area a old theater was on the table for the axe but thanks to Brad Pitt coming back here to his home to do a fundraiser for it they saved it and the memories. By the way count me on the no vote for dirty dancing. lol

Lovely clear capture and it is great that they have restored some of the old things. We are in the middle of doing an old opera house here at the moment and we all have to pay for it in the rates. I haven't seen 'Dirty Dancing' so can't comment.

We have been waiting for six years for the trams to come back to Rochdale, first the Gov/ment say there is money then they say there isn't. This weeks paper says we will have them by 2012, if I live that long. Lol. Manchester has them and some of the outlying areas, they have bought some of the land thats needed and some buildings are being knocked down. Whatch this space. Excellent capture, and a great narrative. Bravo!!!!!

FWIW, I always thought Ronald Reagan was a senile actor playing the part of president. And, ahem, ... I've never seen "Dirty Dancing." Anyway, I love the photo. Funny, the first thing that caught my eye was the billboard with the girl. 'Course the whole image is pretty darned cool.

I always love your Toronto shots. I've walked by there many a time, though usually because I was on my way to a bar of one type or another...

Ok, you feel way too much angst over the movie, lol. The image is all about the contrasts here. Forget the movie. I love the tall high rises in the background against the more antique streetcar and movie theatre design. Technology catching up with the past. This is fantastic.
