Description

Quite a few of you asked some great questions about this estate so I am adding some information I found in a book I purchased there.

Building Begins.

Construction of Biltmore got under way in 1889, it was a massive undertaking that included a mansion, gardens, farms and woodlands. The Centerpiece was a four-story stone house with a 375 - foot long front facade, a monument that would rival the surrounding mountains in grandeur. The architect, Richard Morris Hunt, modeled the architecture on the richly ornamented style of the French Renaissance and adapted elements, such as the stair tower and the steeply pitched roof, from three famous early 16th century chateaux in the Loire Valley, Blois, Chenonceau, and Chambord. The interiors too, were inspired by European properties, such as the English country estates of Knole, Hatfield House, and Haddon Hall, which Hunt and his client had visited in 1889 while on a buying trip for furnishings. In turn of the century fashion, Biltmore was to be decorated with custom made pieces and an eclectic assortment of English and American furniture and artworks in a range of period styles. Thanks for your interest and comments.

Stunning to see all the detail and scale now with the people and vehicles up front. Lovely capture. I was quite amazed at how many of the well known movies included scenes around this house, I cannot even recall seeing it in Forrest Gump.

You always wonder to what extent it was drawn like a ship and to what extent it was raised like a tower.

Very nice picture my friend...I guess if you could afford a place like this you wouldn't be worring about heating costs or is that the reason why Ronnie only uses it for his holiday home...smiles

Great pic, it is funny how we live day to day with so many fantastic places to see, and end up not. I live about 20 min. from Biltmore. I hope you have a chance to photo it during the Christmas Season, it is fantastic then, as it is now.

this is definitely not an old rusticated barn. (In case there were any doubts.) Nope, a litttttttttle more upscale...What's nice about this—since we've seen lots of shots of estates meant to wow us into submission—is that you caught it in a kind of reflective blue gray, and it tones down the opulence and makes it actually mysterious, if even a bit melancholy, which is refreshing after all the "noble" shots of such places. Also, your POV makes the roadway look like a small moat (if it isn't) and gives a little sheen to the shot. Getting head-on shots of monumental structures isn't easy without being trite, but I feel this is very fresh, and the POV really emphasizes the mass of this building. I can honestly say I'll never live in something like that, but it's sure nice to look at especially in this reflective tone. And the bleached-out sky is perfect for the tone of the piece.
