Description

Back about 25 years ago I made some long distance calls to Europe and Japan just to make a persoanl routing for any dialling I had left over from a stint in field service. There was another fibre optic link to Japan but my Japanese was ridiculous though I did get routed to Tokyo from Hiroshima where I was trying to locate the Soroban Bridge. I had to speak Chinese very clearly and the Mandarin took me. I had bought a soroban which is like an abacus in San Francisco's Chinatown in 1953. Then I took up the cause of the binary star and Freiderich Bessel's belief that only a man in complete poverty could separate a binary star. Imagine how amazed he would be with Hubble photos now. I knew from the Encyclopedia Britannica that his house was in Koenigsberg. But now Koenigsberg was Kalliningrad and there were two of them. One by the Polish bordeer and one next to Moscow. This is an easy separation on a map but not so easy speaking Russian in a phone. There was a new satellite postioned to give phone service to the area around the Baltic. The connection was good...right into someone's private home in the middle of the night. I tried to ask for InTourist but realized I was making no sense. That was my last use of the phone for exploration. A few calls to a friend each month until 1988 and I did not need a phone any more. Oh, I did have a phone line from 1999 until 2004 for dialup Internet but no instrument for talking. I spoke once or twice on ICQ to an acquaintance in Australia.

Like, thank you for the Grand Tour, my friend! You anecdotedly covered the planet in a matter of a few minutes. Anyway, superb POV, vivid colors and tortuous dynamics in this concept, T!
