Description

This is a photo taken on 5/25/08 of the Owl Nebula or M97 (from the Messier Catalog of Deep Space Objects). It is classified as a Planetary Nebula, which actually has nothing to do with planets. Rather, it is a White Dwarf Star which has blown out its outer layers and now illuminates the surrounding gas. It gets its name from the appearance of two wide owl-like eyes. If you look closely, you can also see a faint galaxy just below Nebula. The exposure time was a total of 190 minutes, using a black and white CCD camera. The color comes from using colored filters to give individual luminance, red, green, and blue layers, which are re-assembled using CCDSoft and Photoshop software. The telescope used was an 11" SCT Celestron on a Losmandy G11 Equatorial mount.
