Description

All of the layers were rendered in Carrara Studio. The Renderings were then brought into AfterEffects. This is my second attempt at using the techniques described in the book

Yes pixelicious, I use the term layering from the arrangement of the composition in Aftereffects. Each Pass is brought into AE with an alpha channel and treated as a layer to produce the composition just as you have described. From looking at your work and the description of the process I can see that you must do something close to this in Photoshop. Can you give any advice?

unfortunately not really... : ) i always plan to render in passes, and then end up rendering it all normally to save time. but i make heavy use of the object index g-buffer and the photoshop magic wand set to tolerance zero to select objects in the channel pallette if i need to tweak out exposure control. when i get underway with my animation, i will probably spend more time working with "layered rendering" so i don't have to deal with millions of test renders. i learned what i do know on the subject from: rustboy.com and digital lighting and rendering by jeremy birn yes i'm always yapping about this book, but it should be required reading.
