Description

On 15th June 1215 King John reluctantly conceded to the demands of a group of rebellious Barons in a field outside the walls of Windsor Castle called Runneymede. The King allowed his Great Seal to be attached to a document that would change the world and become a significant icon in the ongoing fight for human rights and the struggle for freedom from oppression. The original Magna Carta or Great Charter was a document of 65 clauses or articles. The Barons had opposed the King because he had levied heavy taxes to pay for his unsuccessful wars abroad. They had considered that John's administration of justice was arbitrary and erratic and had demanded that the King issue a charter of liberties to safeguard their rights. Four copies of the original Magna Carta survive one of which was sent to the Bishop of Lincoln. It arrived on 30th June 1215 with the destination Lincolnia inscribed on the back. It was put into the Cathedral Archives where it has been kept safe for nearly 800 years. This image was taken from in Front of Lincoln Castle which I believe now hold the copy of the Magna Carta and you may also see the shop across the street which also takes pride in this great documant.

Excellent view of history. And that part, "he had levied heavy taxes to pay for his unsuccessful wars abroad" seems to still be happening to this day. Let's all read that document again! :o)

What a beautiful capture, Danny... a most impressive cathedral and gorgeous spires. Is it possible to view that original copy in the castle? I've seen one copy and it's a moment I'll never forget. Wonderful history here!
