Medora, North Dakota is located between Jamestown & Bismarck. It was an Army post after the Civil War. Due to the 'turbulent times' General George Custer had been given command of the U.S.7th Calvary & following arrival of reinforcements under General Sibley were under orders to pacify elements of the Sioux Indian Nation.
General Custer was of an impatient nature; and unaware that General Sibley's forces were held up fighting off & subsequently burying their 11 dead Pony Soldiers just South East of Kulm, North Dakota, the order was issued to mount up, move out, tracking the Indians who'd been raiding ranches and rail road camps.
Traveling due West, they navigated the Badlands, unaware of the vast numbers camping in and around Yellowstone, or that General Sibley's force was only 2 days behind them.
The entire 7th Calvary died at Little Big Horn.
It was almost 100 years later, the Pentagon, facing Unit rotation pressures, resurrected the 7th Cav, during the Viet Nam war. They fought the first 'set' battle between the regular North Viet Army & U.S. forces.
Which was told in the movie, "We Were Soldiers."
