Description

In the summer of 1943 on a bright moonlit night, a lone Avro Lancaster Mk.I passes above the sleeping Derbyshire countryside. It does not carry bombs but its payload of two intelligence operatives and a load of supplies destined for the French Resistence are as important to the Allied cause as the night time British and daytime American bomb runs over the German Impire. One of the operatives, a man, will drop into France by parachute. The other, a woman, will remain with the plane until it lands somewhere in occupied France and she is picked up by the Resistence, along with the supplies. You've got to admire an aircrew that regularly lands their large bomber in the dark, in a field, in enemy territory on a regular basis. They will also have passenger for the flight home--one an American fighter pilot shot down over northern France and a Frenchman, whose activities as an Allied spy has been compromised. ___________________ Just an experiment with moonlight. A bit dark, but lighter just didn't look correct. Thanks to all who visited my gallery and to those who made comments on my past work. I appreciate it greatly. Jeremy CREDITS: Terrain: "Northwest Derby" from the Vue 6 extras disk. Aircraft: from the same disk.

Superb piece of artistry. This would not have looked right if it had been brighter. I also appreciated your explanation of what we are seeing. We could do with more work of this calibre from some of our viewers. Excellent.

I get the feeling you're either an aeronautics afficionado or you're retired Air Force, or a commercial pilot. :) I read about the night bombings in the Second World War. I also had to read Catch-22 for my English class. Very sad book. Wonderful sense of intrigue here; like the other picture, I hope they all made it home.
