Description

Every morning some airman was lucky enough to get to rake the gravel and clean up in front of these F-102s in the revetments. By then some birds had been launched and the temperature at this time of day, around 08:00, was climbing toward the upper 80s with humidity in the 90s. Temperatures usually climbed to the mid- to upper 90s in summer with flight line temperatures in the mid 130s. In this concrete revetment at DaNang AB, Vietnam two Convair F-102 'Delta Dagger' were sitting on alert near the south end of runway L17/R35. The F-102 was designed as a fighter interceptor and was used by ADC (Air Defense Command) on the North American continent. Their top speed was Mach 1.25 and all armanent (rockets and missiles)was carried internally. When they were deployed to SEA (South East Asia) they were modified for aerial refueling. Their main function here was to fly CAP (Combat Air Patrol) missions for B-52s. This picture was taken as a slide in summer 1967 and a print was made in 1969. This print was scanned in 2004. Thank you for viewing and commenting on my recent uploads and a special 'Thank you' to those that may have added some of them to their favorites, Sig...

Very impressive! The plane is shimmering in the early sun and the dust the guy creates give the scene life! Wonderful! And the transform -station in the back - an electrician`s delight....

I can imagine the humidity there in Vietnam. a friend of mine was a Navy photographer during the Vietnam war and he told me about the terrible humid conditions. the humidity seems to hang in the air or is it because the slide is so old? either way it is a superb capture
