Description
Haleakal (10.023 ft) is a massive shield volcano that forms more than 75% of the Hawaiian Island of Maui. Early Hawaiians applied the name Haleakal ("House of the Sun") to the summit area only.
In Hawaiian folklore, the depression at the summit of Haleakala was home to the grandmother of the demigod M ui. According to the legend, M ui's grandmother helped him capture the sun and force it to slow its journey across the sky in order to lengthen the day.
I will post a photo later of the view overlooking the crater itself. Shown here is part of the ever changing landscape of the foothills, which often have clouds colliding up against it to create beautiful , dancing gaseous formations. If you look carefully through the clouds at the top, you can see the observatories that are part of "Science City."

I have been to Maui, but never actually to Halekala. Only flying over to Oahu from the Big Island. Nice capture and info. Aloha

It is definitely worth the entrance fee. I can highly recommend it. Be sure to bring some extra layers of cloths though. At 10,000 ft., the temperature is substantially different from sea level, and if the wind is howling, it really feels like winter.

Un beau premier plan très frais (couleur/ligne) avec en arrière ce rideau de brume - Un cliché très poétique
