Description

It has been fourteen years since any of us has seen the sky. My sisters have never seen it. But I have. I was almost five years old the last time. Before the war. I don’t remember much from that time. But I do remember the sky. It was blue. And sometimes it was gray and orange and pink. There were white things called clouds that seemed to just float there in the sky. I remember that people used to fly in it. They would go all over the world in machines that made a lot of noise and flew real fast. I also remember that there was another kind of flying machine that had whirly things that twirled like a top and lifted people into the sky. Those things could also stand still right up there with the clouds. Of course this was before the war. Before the people got angry at each other and started to use those machine to hurt and kill. Us children was sent down to our homes in the deep. There we were looked after by the Plastic People, I think they used to be called robots. After awhile some of our parents came to live with us too. That was happy times for us. My sisters came then. We were safe from the angry people who hurt each other above. But one day my daddy was really sad. He told me that there were no one else left on top to do the hurting anymore. We and our group of families were the only people left alive. In all we numbered 62 people including my twin sisters who were born in our home in the deep along with eight other babies. Of the kids my age there were seven. And they were a few others that were older than me. There were a lot of adults. But they began to die. The Plastic People told us that it was Rad-ee-A shun sickness. They would take the people who died away and we never saw them any more. Now it is just us kids left. Well, I guess we aren’t really kids any more. The oldest among us is twenty-five. I will be Nineteen soon, I think. To celebrate, I wanted to see the sky. The Plastic People said that the Rad-ee-A shun sickness had gone from the surface world. So I took the trek up the long ladder. When I got to the end, I opened the hatch. Water was falling from the sky! Pure sweet water! I feel onto my knees and soaked it in.
