Hi, I am Sig (junge1),
I was born in Dominikus- Krankenhaus in Berlin-Hermsdorf, Bezirk Reinickendorf in December 1939. Bezirk Reinickendorf was one of 20 Bezirke that made up Gross-Berlin before World War II and one of 12 Bezirke that made up former West-Berlin, the other 8 Bezirke were Russian occupied and became East-Berlin after the war. Moved from Berlin to Neurohlau (Nova Role) Sudetenland (now Czech Republic), in August 1943 (our entire block of apartment buildings was bombed out in November 1943) and returned back to Berlin in November 1945. Saw my dad the first time in my life in August/September 1946 after he returned from POW camp. Attended elementary school in Berlin-Waidmannslust, high school in Berlin-Hermsdorf, and trade school in Berlin-Kreuzberg. Was an apprentice for the trade of Klischeeaetzer (photo engraver) at Burrath & Schmidt on Friedrichstrasse between U-Bahnhof Kochstrasse (near to what later became Checkpoint Charlie) and Hallisches Tor.
While watching Allied planes supplying West-Berlin by air during the Berliner Luftbruecke in 1948-49 I developed my love for aircraft. I guess I could be considered a 'Berliner Grosschnauze", or at least I used to be.
'Wanderlust' led me to leave Berlin in summer 1960 to emigrate to Toronto, Canada and in February 1962 to move from Canada to New York City, NY, USA. In January 1963 I joined the United States Air Force, one step ahead of Uncle Sam drafting me. Became a United States citizen within 7 weeks after it became a security issue because of my military career. One day after I was sworn in as a citizen in Seattle, my entire unit left for Southeast Asia in June 1966. After nearly 5 years of active duty (extended 11 months to make it an 18 months overseas deployment) I got discharged and moved to New York City. In 1973 I moved to Phoenix, Arizona and two years later joined the Arizona Air National Guard.
Received my higher education at Arizona State University and the University of Georgia and worked for 22 years for the Arizona Department of Water Resources in various capacities. Upon military retirement in 1999 and State retirement in 2005 I looked at a number of things to keep me occupied. Traveling and joining 'renderosity' in September 2007 were a couple of them,
Sig..

nice shot...

fantastic.... my father flew them in ww2.... interestingly, by the end of the war, each p-51 pilot had his own plane, and, while one leave, he could fly it wherever (within the u.s.) he wanted.

Military aircraft, Formula I racing, and travel are my passion!!!!

As far as travel is concerned, it is not how much I have seen, rather how much is there still to be seen. As far as military aircraft (read loud and fast) I will never get enough, same with Formula I racing, Sig...

excellent capture of this beauty, those RR engines in them made the P-51 lightning fast, thanks for sharing.

Greetings Siegfried, I love vintage aircraft! THe P-51 was a true challenge for the Luftwaffe's ME-109, especially those piloted by the Black Airman to protect the B-17 bombers. Thank you for sharing. Sorry, but I forgot how to spell the squadrons name of these Black African American pilots. Thank you for sharing. egmont

The efforts to clip the wings and add Rolls-Royce Griffons to imitate late Spitfires has created a sub breed that never was in WW-II.

Funny you mention Mustangs. I just got this link from a friend of mine... http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=iCz3BA-oNlY This is a great shot. I really love the pov. It shows off its sleak lines.

Another great shot. My dad used to fly piper cubs when I was a baby. My first "car" was a Mustang. Wicked looking flying machine. Aloha

As they say...they just don't make them like they used to...I also enjoy and appreciate almost anything mechanical and historical...

Can't get much more classic than the P-51's. A standard and mainstay at every airshow that I've ever gone to. Beauitful pieces of aircraft and what a thrill to see them fly. Thank you so much for sharing this pic!

A wonderful catch, Sig! Thanks for describing so perfectly. I can hear the sound...must be pure pleasure.... Some days ago they flew the old Ju- 52 again for some rounds here in Berlin. I hope to try some snapshots... That growling sound is unbelievable.... Bye!

Excellent capture Sig, love that bit of motion blur on the prop. A friend of mine is on the ground crew of the 'Sally B' he has a personal number plate of B-17 on his car and attends most of the air shows that the plane flys at. I keep meaning to go myself but have never got around to it yet. It's on my 'To Do' list. Mind you I am on volume 64 of my to do lists.lol. Superb work and a very interesting narrative. Bravo!!!!!
mickuk50
got some catching up to do sig i`m so far behind :o)..i think the older generation planes have much more character than the modern ones ,far to sophisticated .excellent capture of this beauty mick
