Description
This North American P-51 'Mustang' is getting ready to take to the air at the Reading, PA air show. There are numerous flying P-51s still around. The P-51 was used in Europe as a long-range bomber escort for B-17s and B-24s and later in Japan for B-29s.
This is not only a beautiful aircraft, the sound the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine makes is pure music.
My buddy Rob and I have gone to airshows in Pennsylvania, New York, Texas, Nevada, Arizona and Reno, also in Nevada, and there are always several P-51s present.
In 1997, the 50th anniverary of the USAF as a separate branch, the legendary Chuck Yeager flew a P-51 at Nellis AFB, Las Vegas, Nevada.
At the annual Reno Air Races, the unlimited class always includes highly modified Mustangs like 'Strega' and 'Dago Red', and Bearcats like 'Rare Bear' which race on a triangular, roughly seven mile course and achieve speeds of near 500 miles an hour, and sometime exceed it.

fantastic.... my father flew them in ww2.... interestingly, by the end of the war, each p-51 pilot had his own plane, and, while one leave, he could fly it wherever (within the u.s.) he wanted.

Greetings Siegfried, I love vintage aircraft! THe P-51 was a true challenge for the Luftwaffe's ME-109, especially those piloted by the Black Airman to protect the B-17 bombers. Thank you for sharing. Sorry, but I forgot how to spell the squadrons name of these Black African American pilots. Thank you for sharing. egmont

Can't get much more classic than the P-51's. A standard and mainstay at every airshow that I've ever gone to. Beauitful pieces of aircraft and what a thrill to see them fly. Thank you so much for sharing this pic!

A wonderful catch, Sig! Thanks for describing so perfectly. I can hear the sound...must be pure pleasure.... Some days ago they flew the old Ju- 52 again for some rounds here in Berlin. I hope to try some snapshots... That growling sound is unbelievable.... Bye!

Excellent capture Sig, love that bit of motion blur on the prop. A friend of mine is on the ground crew of the 'Sally B' he has a personal number plate of B-17 on his car and attends most of the air shows that the plane flys at. I keep meaning to go myself but have never got around to it yet. It's on my 'To Do' list. Mind you I am on volume 64 of my to do lists.lol. Superb work and a very interesting narrative. Bravo!!!!!
