Description
This was a different project for me. I got to mix my interest in woodworking with my interest in graphics. My wife and I were having dinner with our friend Wendy some time back. She told us a really sweet story about going to the beach with her grandfather when she was a little girl. She liked to look for pieces of beach glass and with the imagination of a child the red pieces were rubies and the green pieces were emeralds. When she showed them to her grandfather he said “These are your jewels and you are a princess!”
I took it in my head to depict this scene and put it on a jewelry box. I created the scene with Poser and Bryce and then finished it up in Photoshop. I printed it on watercolor paper and enhanced the look of it a bit with watercolors. Then I decoupaged it onto the lid of the jewelry box. This was the first time I did decoupage and I was pleased with how it came out.
I made the box with curly maple to get the wavy beach/sand/waves feeling. I inset a piece of beach glass into the lid as a catch to open it with. The shell brasses around the hinges are original too, etched with the chemicals usually used for circuit board etching. My wife did the lining of the box. We gave it to Wendy for her birthday a couple of weeks ago, she was thrilled!
