Description

Please watch in full size to appreciate the details. Thank you. This is my third image in my "Colony Series". Links to the first two are below. I hesitated a bit on how to classify this one because it's a bit of a mixture between surrealism and sci-fi. In the end, I opted for sci-fi because it was in that way that it was born in my mind. I have been a bit absent from the gallery, from the forums and from comments. Sorry for that. It's been a mixture of real life activities and a bit of demotivation towards CG. I have plenty of ideas for new images but not the will to make them. I think I need a break and embrace other activities so I will probably not post anything nor comment for the next few weeks. Thanks for watching! Note: this image is for sale as a print in RedBubble, here. "The Colony is also for sale, here. thumb_1678967.jpgthumb_1689939.jpg EDIT: I don't usually write much about the technical details of my images but once in a while I get some questions so, for those interested in these things, here goes: The maze was made with a terrain. I made the design in PS, made it tileable and then applied to the terrain. In the terrain editor I made some changes to remove the too obvious pattern repetition and also made those cracks. The material is a bitmap from bricks I found somewhere on the net. The sky is an alphaplane of a photo I fetched from NASA site. That's a real thing, somewhere in the universe. Amazing... The statues are M3, morphed and posed in Poser, of course. In Zbrush I made them the "hair". In Vue I textured them. The structure on top of the first statue was made in Sketchup. Started from a cube and then applied dozens of extrusions. I made the city in Zbrush, textured it in Vue. The atmosphere has little fog and high haze, at a very low altitude and with a strong luminosity. The planet has two materials (rock and lava) mixed with a bitmap I made in PS. The ring is simply a flat torus with a rock ecosystem. There are two directional lights here, very close to each other. One of them is iluminating the ring only, the other is iluminating everything else. The lights have soft shadows of 3 degrees. This was rendered in GI, with a very high sky dome gain (about 15). The original image was rendered with 3000 pixels wide, AA of 98%, subrays of 8 and 20, about 6 hours in a quadcore.

I like it, lots of depth! I'm sure there is a message here but I'm not sure how to read it.

Gosh, this is simply marvelous! So many areas of interest. Such competent execution. Kinda reminds me of something out of "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy." Really fine work. Congrats!!

An excellent work Artur, and I appreciated the time and effort you put into it...made more evident by the commentary you've provided.Love the detail work and the atmosphere and lighting in this.If no-one hears from me send out a search party for I fear I will be lost somewhere in this maze!!

Have more or less the same kind of problems (real life/demotivation) so I understand you quite well. Anyway this is a very impressive image as most of your images. The only thing that visually disturbs me a bit is the left green tree; to say it shortly, I agree with Cobaltdream comment.
