Description
"Holoholo" is Hawaiian and means to go traveling, go out and about, or head off for a ride or sail.
What you see here is Sandy Beach on Oahu, a place where inexperienced body boarders are often rescued after they have taken a spill and broken a bone (or neck as sometimes happens). As the warning sign says, there is a strong current here and--more alarmingly (no warning for this though)--a shallow shore line that enormous waves crash unto. I remember ABC news once did a special on how the beaches in "paradise" (i.e. Oahu, Hawaii) are among the most dangerous in the world. When they got around to filming this location, they documented how a Japanese tourist had become immobilized (probably a spinal or neck injury) attempting to body board here.
About the story behind this shot ... I stood in the line of sight of the warning sign waiting for the right moment, which must have taken about an hour and 10 or 15 minutes. Before the right scene materialized, I shot lots of other things going on at the beach ... and managed to get a hilacious sun burn because I hardly moved and had no suntan protection on. NOT a good idea. Be forewarned: the sun in Hawaii is very, very strong, which you wouldn't know given the cool trade winds that are almost always blowing.

I guess that they get rescued if the sharks don't get to them first!!! Yikes!!! Not your average family beach!!! :)
