Description

This was one of my first photos at the raptor center, taken through the chicken wire caging. Dark enough for the owl, the photo was shot at 800 ISO at about 1/60 sec or so. There is noise in the shot but I liked the face of this large owl regardless of the noise. This owl has been released and is now flying free again. The distorted pupil in the right eye concerned the staff since the vision of an owl is paramount to hunting. In the large containment, the owl proved well able to catch live prey and hunt. Release was a couple of weeks ago. I would have liked to have see that event! Owls will "bark" if you are entering their personal space. This wild owl claimed a large personal space and my presence on the other side of the enclosure was met with the barking from snapping the beak together. It is not a call but a strange clapping sound sound of lower pitch than expected. That was my warning not to get closer.

I noticed that eye right away and wondered if it would be able to see to hunt. Glad it is/was. Such a dramatic capture, Tom. Very full of dignity.

I don't remember I ever saw a bird shot in b&w here on Rendo and I have to admit I realy like it even with a noise. Great head capture and good to know he is free now.

Excellent Photo : wild and warm. Close-up was good idea. I wonder at what it can be thinking ? Eye expression is so deep in strength.
