Description

Florence is known as the "cradle of Renaissance" (la culla del Rinascimento) for its monuments, churches and buildings. The best-known site and crowning architectural jewel of Florence is the domed cathedral of the city, Santa Maria del Fiore, known as The Duomo. The magnificent dome was built by Filippo Brunelleschi. Work started on the dome in 1420 and was completed in 1436. The nearby Campanile tower (also known as "Giotto's Tower") is also a highlight of Florence. Both the dome itself and the campanile are open to tourists and offer excellent views. The dome, 600 years after its completion, is still the largest dome built in brick and mortar in the world. The double walls of the dome are just thick enough that a person can ascend up the stairs between them to the top of the dome. Climbing those stairs, which are very steep and, it seems, go on for ever, is REAL exercise, but the view from the top is priceless. This shot was taken from the top of Giotto's Tower, which stands next to and at a slightly lower height compared to The Duomo.

Great view, I was here two years ago and those Campanile steps go on forever, but the view is worth the climb, excellent capture of the duomo and surounding rooftops!
