Description

This needs no introduction. Standing here, one can almost see the crowds going wild and imagine the spectacle of gladiators fighting. What used to be a marble structure is now reduced to brick because all of the marble stones were taken from the Colosseum to construct other buildings in Rome, like St. Peter's basilica. What this picture illustrates is the problem with visiting the ancient sites in Rome (or most ancient sites throughout the world as recently proclaimed by Rick Steves on National Public Radio): too much is left to the imagination. Only minimal ruins--often in far more deteriorated condition than the Colosseum--are what awaits the unsuspecting tourist. It is hard to grasp the grandeur of this city based on such measly remains. The one big exception would be the Pantheon (click on the picture below to take a look). In any case, I strongly advise getting one of those overlay books (i.e. "that-was-then, here's-what-it-looks-like-today" editions). With those in hand, sightseeing is far more satisfying. thumb_1695697.jpg

...super-Aufnahme! Wenn man bedenkt, wann das erbaut wurde und in den Gängen die Löwen und die Gladiatoren "herumschlichen" - imposant!

A wonderful complete view of the colosseum.I used to think that time had deteriorated these magnificent structures until I found out what you stated above. The marble was taken down to construct Christian churches and buildings. The same happened in Seville where a mosque was taken down to built the cathedral!!!
