Description
1897 opened "Dicksonska Folkbiblioteket" Dicksons Public libray and was a library until 1967, when library operations moved to the municipial library at Götaplatsen, Gothenburg.
For a few stormy years from 1970-72 the building was called "Hagahuset" and was a youth house, an era which ended with the occupying forces and police.
Since 1973, the house known as Allégården and is a daytime activity house for all pensioners in Gothenburg and in the evening an associations and activity house for all.
The house was designed by the architect in fashion at the time, Hans Hedlund, nephew of famous journalist SA Hedlund.
He had, among other things, been over in New England in the United States and drawn inspiration for this building
which is a mixture of styles in which the Nouveau (jugend) is the dominant styles. The house is unique in the Gothenburg street picture.
"Dicksonska Folkbiblioteket" was the first public library in the Nordic region, completed the 1897
The building was built with funds from a donation from James Robertsson Dickson.
James Robertson Dickson 10 / 3 1810 - 4 / 7 1873
James is one of the brothers Dickson, whose ancestor Robert Dickson immigrant to Gothenburg from Scotland 1802.
Dickson family has had significant influence on Gothenburg's development, not least when it comes to housing.
James R: son Dickson became over the years a wealthy man who donated their accumulated funds, among other things,
to the Dicksonska Folkbiblioteket which he founded in 1861 in an apartment in the suburb of Haga.
At his death he donated his wealth at 630 000 SEK (currently around 25-30 million) to several other establishments,
such as Practical housekeepingschool in Gothenburg, hospital for the incurable, a house for the poor, Chalmerska educational institution, Gothenburg Vet .- and Witt-society.
