Description

Ah, what trip to the beach would be complete without being attacked by seagulls? None I know of, for sure! But us? Heck, we go out and LOOK for the noiseboxes with wings to feed them. In a way, they're kind of like the old wire coat hangers....you have one then suddenly you have a swarm! And they make no secret of the fact if they don't feel you're giving them enough attention or bread (even if they just swallowed a whole hunk of it not a nano-second before). Fortunately these guys were pretty mellow (well, except for the General that seemed to be rallying the troops to attack the truck - boy it sure was a good thing we just went and got that sucker washed! Not! But I'll be kind and spare you the details of that) This was taken on a stretch of Highway One between our Condo and W.R.Hearst Beach, on the far left hill is where Hearst Castle is, among that corpse of trees (nope, sorry, don't have any pics of the castle for you just now, we haven't been on one of their tours for a while, but we've been on them enough). All the surrounding hillsides are still owned by the Hearst family. Okay, okay, back to the seagulls. These fellas aren't shy about picking a crust of bread right out of your hand or making a snatch and grab at a Cheet-O YOU intended to eat and let me tell you, when you dump the crubs out and move just a foot or so away it's a scene that even Hitchcock couldn't have planned when they converge. Starling likes to chase after them, but she's never come close to catching one (ah, the thrill of the chase, you know?) and they keep comming back, so they must not mind it. Though they do give an earfull for disrupting them from their munchies. This was just a fun image that had a lot of birds, I have a few others that I (personally) consider much better shots - but this was the popular vote with Mom and Starling...so I got outvoted. Hope you like. Photo (c) 2008 Twilight Productions

Voracious rascals. A boatswain mate chief once swore to me gulls have a straight pipe from beak to tail. Nice capture of the scavengers.

Why can I just hear it now? "MINE! MINE! MINE!" Great capture of the rats with wings! Personally I'd be terrified in that position... unless Starling was there to chase them off, chuckles Well done!

Great shot. The noiseboxes with wings, I always knew them as Sky rats. they are filthy critters. I am glad you survived the onslaught of those aggressive foul.
