Description

I just discovered something in Vue that I'm very excited about, but first a small apology - this image is very similar to a previous post, so sorry for boring you with a similar image. However, I justify posting it on three grounds - first, I made some changes to the textures and lighting, so it is a little different; second, I think it is probably a better final image than the first one. But most important is something you can't see in the image itself - the previous version of the image took four days to render - this took around twelve hours to do two renders of it (with different lighting setups)! I have always liked GI for rendering skin, and using layered transmapped hair models, but the two together multiply rendering times exponentially. Sometimes, a render would zip through until it came to the hair, when it would appear to virtually stop. However I have discovered a little gem in the advanced material editor in Vue - under the effects box (top right) there is a tick box labelled Indirect Lighting, this is On by default, but clicking it Off means that AO, GI and GR are ignored by that material. Using this on hair maodels means that you can still use GI (or whatever) for the skin, but you don't get the corresponding slow down from using a good hair model! Perhaps you can see why I am excited (or perhaps you are sitting there saying "Yes, I knew about that" - well you didn't tell me!). I have limited the use of some great hair models because they are just sooo slooooow to render, although they look wonderful. Now I can use them much more freely. And does this change affect the look of the hair, I hear you ask? Well yes, but not very much, and the differences are easier to get around by rendering in alternative lighting setups, which is quicker than a single render without this option. So the render above was not only much, much quicker, I think it looks better too! And in a world full of compromises and trade-offs, that to my mind is a real win! I hope this is valuable to others here who use Vue to render Poser people. Thanks for looking, for reading my waffle, and for any feedback you are kind enough to leave! Phil

I've just seen this on a different computer to the one I used to render it and it's amazing how different it looks - darker and with the yellow-blue balance more towards yellow. So apologies if it looks a little dark and/or jaundiced on your PC screen! Phil ;-)

Thanks for the tip Phil ... I haven't done any renders in Vue in quite some time but this is very good to know for the next time. So far, what I consider a long render in Poser with passable results is about 15 minutes. In Vue I consider myself lucky to get by with 12 hours for a similar character. Anyway, back to the subject. This is an excellent render and quite beautifully done.
