Description

By all rights, this should probably be part of my "Light and Glass" series. However, every time I looked at this image, I started singing that song in my head, and "Light and Glass: Bathroom Window" just didn't have the same feel to it. I was standing in the living room of Trent and Dave's new house, and took a picture through the window, across a courtyard, to the outside of the house on the other wall (90 degrees from where I was standing). That really IS a bathroom window! What caught my eye about this was all the natural layers of reflection and distortion. First, I'm looking through a window that was original to the house, which was built in 1922. The glass is a bit wavy, and creates a visual distortion. Second, there are reflections on the living room window, which show up as vertical and horizontal white streaks. (There's no furniture in the house to reflect. Wouldn't that be cool?) Third, the bathroom window is also from 1922, and you can see how it distorts the blinds. Of course part of the distortion of the blinds is because of the living room window, so you get two for the price of one! Last, there are reflections in the bathroom window of a tree that's outside, out of view in the courtyard. This house will be extensively remodeled, and the courtyard and that bathroom window will be going away, so this is a view that won't be available in a couple of years. A little slice of history for you! (I'm partial to the Joe Cocker version, myself.)

Thanks for description of what I was seeing - it helped me appreciate the beauty and uniqueness of the picture. It reminded me of the poem "There Was A Crooked Man" about living in a crooked little house.

We stood in the very same spot and you saw something completely different!! I also love the old glass and the distorted effect it has!! Great title, BTW, I'll be singin it all day long: She came in through the bathroom window Protected by a silver spoon But now she sucks her thumb and wanders By the banks of her own lagoon Didn't anybody tell her? Didn't anybody see? Sunday's on the phone to Monday, Tuesday's on the phone to me She said she'd always been a dancer She worked at 15 clubs a day And though she thought I knew the answer Well I knew but I could not say. And so I quit the police department And got myself a steady job And though she tried her best to help me She could steal but she could not rob. Didn't anybody tell her? Didn't anybody see? Sunday's on the phone to Monday, Tuesday's on the phone to me Oh yeah. All together now ~~~!!!!!!

My grandmother's cabin had been built in the 1920s and had that wavy glass, even when we were there in the 1960s. The cabin has since been torn down, which is an absolute shame. However, the wavy glass is such an interesting way of looking at the world, and it reminded me of her and the cabin. :o)

Excellent and I like the wall. But the window reminds of the place I worked for the museum. It was SUCH an old building which easly could be in the museum it self. Most of the windows had these waves and were old like the house. :)))

I'm glad you explained it Tara, I thought my eyes were going on me again. Lol. I thought either the screen is going or my eyes are on their way out again. #;0) Excellent capture and well spotted, I like the tree in the reflection. I hope they save the glass when the window goes, if at all posssible that is. Superb work. Bravo!!!!!

This is marvelous, and it helped me greatly to read your narrative. It makes me go back and revisit and check out the varieties of distortion and reflection. Great that you saw all this and that you shared . This is great!

I love photos of windows I don't know why, I've never really thought about it all that much, maybe I will after seeing this excellent photo of two windows in one.

I realy like a compo and a soft distorsion is a nice play. Like a green tree reflection in a window.

With that deceptive title I thought you were referring to a female burglar! Anyhow, good capture of the window, wavy lines and all, with an interesting historical followup on the whole thing, Tara. BTW, Marilyn's paean is a tough act to follow.

Excellent shot and narrative. I had that song in my head all day yesterday, but it was the real version. Joe Cocker, indeed!
