Description

This is a young Perigrine falcon with the slate blue Cere and beak when it captures its prey as most falcons do they spread the wings over the prey( Mantling) to keep any other eagled eyed raptor from spotting its catch.. This term like many falconry terms are widespread in our language: Of course we are more familiar with The term mantle piece which comes from the action a raptor makes to cover and protect its food called mantling or to mantle. The word codger, used today to describe an elderly person, can be traced back to the falconry term cadger, or a person who carried a portable perch called a cadge for the falconer. Most cadgers were old falconers and in time a corruption of this came to be used as above. When raptors drink it is called bowsing and a bird that drinks heavily is called a boozer, the term used to describe the same tendency in humans. Hoodwinked, was the action of placing the hood over the falcon's head to recover the captured prey from the falcon's talons, pretty much the same as now when you are cheated of something. Also phrases we use come also from falconry such as a fair exchange is no robbery where the falconer exchanges the capture for another tit bit to return the bird back to the fist. I first was focussed on falconry when I worked for someone named Frederick. I had read about Pope Gregory waiting in the snow in college History but this was a martial thing and even a feminine one.
