The mage sat in his chair, quietly reading. It wasn't even a spell book, just some historical accounts of a long ago war, but he relished it just the same. He'd spent far too many years studying magic to waste a moment reading anything he didn't want to. Spellbooks were nice, but as a sorcerer, he really didn't need them. Never did.

The thurmaturgic circle sitting before the fireplace flickered to life. He reached out with his mind and tested its message. It had been specially created to allow communication, but like a visitor that knocks at the door and is ignored, he always had the option of simply not answering. It was also woven very carefully with magic and psyche, ensuring that not just anyone could operate it. He recognized the mind on the other side, even through her many defenses. He touched the circle with his mind, activating just the right crystals and an image of sultry beauty appeared above it.

"Yes, witch, what can I do for you today?"

"Its good to see you too, Sciorro."

"Your need?"

"Oh, you're in one of those moods. I see."

"I sincerely doubt it. Otherwise you would never bother me like this and proceed to waste my time. What do you want?"

"Very well. My sisters and I require the services of you and your friends."

"Where did you get the idea that I am their agent?"

"You have the scrying device that allows me to contact you. There is no other way,… well, no other way that would be effective,… or bloodless,… to contact the Jeweled Cobra."

"I'm listening, but I warn you, our new tactical leader isn't likely to take one of your hack and slash jobs. Nor is she the kind to pull guard duty. And we are all old enough and wise enough to know a betrayer when we smell one."

"Betrayer? Moi? I'm hurt. So what would appeal to her?"

"Enough money for all six of us to retire,… to another plane of existence where our enemies might not find us for thousands of years,… and a challenge. She's big on challenges. Boring milk runs,… not so much."

"How about all that plus infinite knowledge, the secrets to every question you've ever had?"

If had been anyone else he would have laughed and severed the connection. But this one?

"O.K. I'm interested. What's the job? If I like the sounds of it, I'll talk to Bloodwine."
