Description

This was a little experiment I did this week (not a real polished work, but interesting for what it is...), taking a render and turning it into a (digital) charcoal drawing. I used a recipe from the O'Reilly Digital Studio Photoshop Photo Effects Cookbook (http://www.amazon.com/Photoshop-Photo-Effects-Cookbook-Follow/dp/0596100221/ref=pd_bbs_sr_3?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1215744184&sr=1-3) and it was actually suppose to be a pencil simulation, but charcoal seems closer to what I achieved. I highly recommend the book. It's not just a showcase encouraging you to throw around a few filters, the recipes are detailed and powerful bringing to bear the full force of Photoshop's tools. There are some other great recipes for making simulated watercolors and oil paintings. Most of these type of techniques require the user has a tablet.

Nicely done! You've picked a great pose and lighting for a base of the drawing effect. I agree, it seems to be more charcoal than pencil, but its a great look. The piece has a lot of impact. Thanks for the info on the book-its going directly on my buy list! Kudos for the Artist of the Week! Well deserved!

That really came out nice and I think after seeing this I might look into getting that book. I'm always looking for new ways so spice up the old renders. Thanks for the tip and a great image!

Very nice image! It does look like charcoal, though. Lat time I did something that looked like pencil, I had to dig out that old Microsoft free photoviewer from office ninety-something. Crude, but it did the job. And congratulations, too!

Excellent use of filters. I need to check out that book. It does looks like charcoal with the smudges, but could be an ebony piece too. Nice job.
