Description

Hello all together! This pic shows the same place as yesterday, but we can have a small "peeping Tom" look inside... INSIDE, this is a very special theme here in Berlin. Behind these rows of houses are backyards, another row of houses, a second backyard...and so on. We had blocks here with seven backyards in a row, all of them small, dark, overcrowded with people and lots of children. On a square kilometer could live more then 10 000 people and the situation was the same as in the Lower Eastside of New York or the slums of Kalkutta... 100 years ago a backyard had to be not greater as 9,50 meters from wall to wall, this is room enough that the horse-powered fire-engine could circle inside... Please imagine such a small backyard, surrounded by houses with 5 floors and with only one toilet for all persons in these houses. It must been the hell! In this time it was a sensation that a normal bricklayers master, Mister RIEHMER, had the idea and enough money to construct a whole streetbloc with great flats, a very large backyard inside with lots of gardens, trees, plastered ways and light, light, light..... (to be continued) Thanks for your interest and your comments, they are always welcome, of course. I will be back tomorrow and I wish you all together a fine sunday. Relax and have a good time! billcody

I have just typed RIEHMER into my search engine and the very first one on the list is the Master Brick Layer, made a very interesting read Wolfgang. A great vision he had and he managed to realise it as well. Superb capture, can't wait to see what is inside, it only showed the same sort of shot that you uploaded yesterday. Bravo!!!!!

Fascinating! and such interesting information. It's wonderful that history proves that we will always have some people who care about others and the environment in which we live.
