Description

Nikon 7900 pocket camera camera - hand held image. Yesterday's posting showed a young male Widow Skimmer. He had the body and wing colors of the females. This is a mature specimen. I think they are quite striking. I was asked (in a recent comment) about how many different kinds of Dragonflies I have on my property. My field guide shows that about 65 different species have been recorded in my part of the world and maybe about 13 more that are pretty close. I have seen and identified about 17 species. I have photos of 13 of those. It is obvious I have not run out of new species to find, lol. Thanks to those who take the time to comment. Lee

It looks like it is air-brushed. Nature is great. Beautiful shot.

I wouldn't mind chasing him around either. I found a night version of a dragonfly in a bugzapper up here once. Looked just like a regular one except it was fuzzier and had feathery antennae.

What a project to find and record all those different sorts! This one is interesting in that they develop the white in maturity, I suppose it's to attract the girls!

Fantastic Lee, he's wearing a tuxedo, must be going out on a date. Superb capture, I must say I wouldn't mind being your neighbour, searching out all those different species, plus all the other varied species of little critters. It would be a lifes work. Excellent work, and a very interesting narrative. Bravo!!!!!
