Description

I captured this Brown Hooded Kingfisher on camera at my work in Pretoria West,South Africa. The Brown-hooded Kingfisher (Halcyon albiventris) is a species of bird in the Halcyonidae family. It is found in Angola, Botswana, Republic of the Congo, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Gabon, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Somalia, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. They are more than likely the best known of the kingfishers and can be seen perching on the end of branches scanning the branch for food. They do not feed on fish but eat mainly insects and lizards and sometimes young of other birds. Males can be told from females by the black feathers on the shoulder, the females being brown. They have a call which can be interpreted as saying 'pity for me'. They will breed in holes in trees or banks, from September to November with the female incubating about 14 days. There is Fish Eagles which is visiting our Power Station Dam on a Regular basis.I hope to capture them on camera very soon.

Nice shot Christo, the kingfishers over here are very elusive and fast to move on. I have never captured one.

Excellent capture Christo, I have only ever seen a couple of Kingfishers in the wild here and as Alan says they don't sit still long enough for you to get a shot of them. Excellent clarity and detail, a beautiful bird. Bravo!!!!!
