Description

Volcan Arenal (1633m) is the centerpiece of the Parque Nacional Volcan Arenal created in 1995 and is located at the eastern end of the Laguna de Arenal. Volcan Arenal is Costa Rica's most active volcano and is often mentioned as the second most active volcano in the world, after Kilauea. 'Arenal was temporarily dormant from about 1500AD until July 20, 1968, when huge explosions triggered lava flows that destroyed two villages and killed about 80 people and 45,000 head of cattle. Despite this massive eruption, the volcano retained its almost perfect shape. (Lonely Planet, Costa Rica, 2000). The volcano is continuously active, with occassional quiet periods of a few weeks. But generally, Arenal produces ash columns, massive explosions, and glowing red lava flows almost daily since 1968. This picture was taken on 5 December 2004. @busi2ness(Piet) The cloud on top of the volcano is actually part of the daily activity of the mountain. It is some sort of volcanic emission!!

A classic "calendar" shot that could be easily used for anything from and avertisement to a tour brochure. Very well captured.
