Description

A Hood Ornament? Well, not quite... the Paradise Jacamar of the Amazon does often strike the hood ornament pose though. With their energetic behavior and iridescent feathers you would think a jacamar is part of the hummingbird family but it isn’t. It's family line is closer to puffbirds, toucans, and woodpeckers. Like all members of the order Piciformes, jacamars and their relatives have zygodactyl feet, with two toes pointing forward and two facing back. Jacamars evolved with this toe arrangement, which helps them grasp branches while hunting in trees. Scientists believe jacamars are closely related to Old World bee-eaters, which also prey on flying insects, have similar plumage, and raise their young in the same manner. Rendered in DS Studio with very minor post work in Painter. Models: Songbird Remix Amazon and Perching Places (Me/DAZ), Multiplane Cyclorama (DAZ)
