Description

Taken on the morning of May 1, 2008, May Day, or the ancient festival of Beltane, at one of the most famous places in the world. Sorry I haven't been around as much, sometimes life gets in the way. Thank you very kindly for your views and comments.

As a cocker spaniel to a cavalier once said- this is the best sunrise at stonehenge I ever saw! Excellent shot!

What a gorgeous vista of Stonehenge you've captured here, I am in awe, it's so beautiful. I saw the site once, years ago, after reading the tragic ending of Tess...of the d'Urbervilles, as she was taking refuge in this place.I also like the reference to the Celtic festival of Beltane.(what about coming back to Stonehenge for Samhain, with a totally different lighting?)

Wow! gorgeous shot, and one I remember well, Druids and all. I understand it's changed a lot, in that visitors are now roped off, unlike the two occasions I visited, and wandered freely! This is wonderful.

What a pity you couldnt be there for the summer solstice Maria. The sunrise is spectacular when it rises over the heal stone on midsummers day (June 22) We lived near Stonehenge when i was a child.in the 1950,s/early60's. You could park the car on the grass, walk to the stones and picnic beneath them. That would not be allowed these days, although the vandals of the 60's and 70's who daubed the ancient stones with paint are long gone. the site is well protected now by English Heritage
