Description

Mt. Columbia (3747m) with Athabasca Glacier located in Alberta, Canada. The picture was taken from highway 93 that runs through Jasper and Banff National Parks. The mountain and icefield are located approximately where Jasper National Park ends and Banff begins. The people visible in the photo give it scale, but what is not visible in the picture is how much the glacier has retreated in the last century. Markers along the side of the glacier indicate the extend of the icefield in various years. This picture was taken in September 1992 and later scanned. Thank you for viewing and commenting on my recent uploads, Sig...

I have been up on this glacier in the 50's and met the four pontoon Bombardier snow mobiles.

Really beautiful. I like the little people down, they add much life to the scene. You are right to scan these old photographs that so often contain visual treasures! Thanks for sharing! Now, I hope that in a near future this ice cap will continue to exist! Global warming is a real treat but it depends on us.

I know a few people who have gone on cruises and have hiked to the glaciers. This is so cool. They are so tiny compared to the scenery. But, they are starting to melt. Wonder what will happen in the next few years or so. Great shot Sig. Aloha

18 years down the line, I wonder what it would look like now from the same pov Sig? The tiny folk do give it scale, I se a dot in the top right corner of the sky, is it a speck on the film or is it a UFO? Lol. I echo ElizaB's comment as well, are you planning a trip on the shuttle at some time? Great photo ops there I would guess. #;0). Excellent image. Bravo!!!!!

Wonderfully done, fascinating. You certainly have an organized system to be able to locate all these shots and reproduce them so nicely. Very enjoyable to see all the places you have been.
