Description

This castle is chiefly known as a romantic folly supposedly reproducing a small medieval Welsh chieftain's stronghold, built in the 1870s, for the 3rd Marquess of Bute to a design by William Burges, and possessing the most remarkable interior decoration. However, it was built upon the remains of a genuine 13th century castle built in two stages. Evidence was found of the building having been deliberately slighted by mining. It was built of rough rubble sandstone, and named Castell Coch meaning Red Castle. Sadly the lighting was poor as we arrived at closing time, sadly we had very little time there and was unable to go inside. I thought you would like to view it despite the slight lighting problem. Looks to be in pretty good condition, pity you missed the entrance cut off time, I will have to find this and visit for myself. A very good image but for the sky, you managed to get some good detail into it. Excellent work. Bravo!!!!!

Glad to see you managed to see the outside at least. Nice shot, especially considering the weather that week. Perhaps next time you'll have a chance to go inside, it is quite special.

We were on a SeeWales tour bus, and arrived quite late about 17.15 hrs and the castle closes at 17.30 hrs. I will no doubt return to Wales, I was most impressed and there is so much to see and do.

Beautiful image i love this castle we always pass it on the M4 just outside cardiff have never been there but it's on the list to see, Excellent well done..
