Description
That's it! Just the heart of a lily.
I am constantly amazed by nature's spectacles like this, by the glorious colours, and by the little spots of colour that become spikes on closer examination.........wonderful stuff!
If anyone knows the biological purpose of those little spikes, I'd be fascinated to learn of it. They could almost be little road signs, pointing those pollinating insects in the right direction!
I have just received a possible answer from my own daughter!
I think those inner, smaller points are "stimulatory" for the insects. I know, I know, it sounds rude - but I think the lilies are giving the bees and whatever other insects that visit them some extra motivation for pollination, and to get them to stay awhile. Some flowers actually mimic the sexual organs of the type of insect that normal pollinate it, so the insects actually try to have sex with the flower during the course of pollination. Nature is a clever girl huh? (and frisky too).

Oh dear ... I'm blushing! (No, no, my mistake - just a hot flash - never mind.) This is gorgeous! The thing that amazes me most about you as a photographer is that you don't seem to know how good you are at this. What an awesome image. Beautiful work!

OMG, superlative macro of the little fried bananas (stamens) balanced on the ends of green toothpicks (sepals?), jutting up above sliced heavily seeded watermelon. Right? Vivid clarity and colors in another super macro, Chris!
