Description

Though small in size (say, 1 cm), the flower of the cardinal orchid (Orchis purpurea) is quite spectacular. Many flowers form a bunch. The part of the flower that shows great variations among European orchids is good for landing of insects. A special process of the flower will then put pollen on the insect's back. Did you know that: orchis (ancient Greek)means testicles (testis, Lat.). Many European Orchis species have 2 nubs (tuber) under the soil, capable of storing nutrients for several years. These nubs reminded botanists of what the name suggests.

This is one of the most interesting orchids I've seen since it is so differently shaped from what I think of as being usual. The spotted "suit" is really beautiful. But I think his pajamas are a bit tight in the crotch.
