Description

Sorry this isn't as colorful as my last spider shots, but it was sort of a gloomy day (you know the kind, stark gray-white clouds blanketing the sky). I was walking around Mom's garden as she was picking slugs off her plants when I saw this little spider scuttling along the ground. Although I'd been hoping to see a toad, I thought it was cool the spider had an egg sack attached to their ass, so I took some pictures. Since the egg sack was in shadow and the 'pidy ran away shortly thereafter, I couldn't get a decent shot of it, but you can sort of see it here. This is dedicated to Leeco, purveyor of fantastic pictures of small animals. He's also left some very specific and helpful comments. I know this wasn't at the pond, but man, I was thinking of you when I took the shot and I hope you enjoy it. Postwork: brightening, brightening, brightening. Cropped it a little bit. EDIT [August 2011]: it's cissexist to assume gender based on reproductive stuff. sorry i didn't realize that back then. also, i replaced the thumbnail, for arachnophobes. sorry about the original thumbnail, too.

Fantastic details. I always am suprised how less scary spider look close up. Well, I would not get so close to one but I do enjoy looking at those close up shots of them.

Thanks for the dedication. I am pleased that you enjoy my hobby and that you share my interest in "fantastic" little critters, lol. Nice capture of this mama spider. Many spider females carry the eggs sacks till hatching and then even carry around the young. They can be very good parents. Thanks for sharing. Lee
