Description

This tower over looks Corbiere Lighthouse which is one of the most photographed landscapes in Jersey. The tower was originally built as an observation tower by the occupying German forces during World War 2. It took 5,000 bags of cement to build. It later became the headquarters for Radio Jersey which was under the administration of the Harbours Department, keeping all shipping advised of the weather and more importantly the shipping activities in the English Channel and Gulf of St Malo. It was transferred to the Jersey Heritage Trust in 2006 and has been refurbished into a 3 bedroomed luxury holiday let. The lounge, on the 6th floor commands the most magnificent views across to Corbiere and St Ouens Bay. The cost in high season is £1460 per week and in low season it drops to various levels down to £860.00 per week. Many fortifications are now being refurbished and used as holiday accommodation. Thank you for your views and comments. Susan

Wonderful history on this and I find the building to be intersting with the slices in the side.

Thanks for your comments, PJ the slices on the side are the placements where German Officers would man their posts with their weapons. Robin, I will post the view for you tomorrow so you can see what anyone who rents this fortification can see from their lounge at £1460 per week and we who live here can see for free every day of the week. Janiss your comments are as always appreciated :)

What a wonderful idea and very Dystopian in appearance. I have no idea if I will ever have a chance to travel that way but if I do I hope I recall this.

well, not only did I see such an interesting building, I learned about Jersey.I looked it up on the web and found lots of history and their desire to be independent from the UK. I am assuming maybe New Jersey derived their name from this same small island.excellent capture.

Richard, just a quick copy and paste for you but you can see the full text of the history of this Island at www.Jersey.com. this is the official website. Lots of different areas to view including history. Jersey and New Jersey The relationship between the Island and the American state of New Jersey can be traced back to the English Civil War. King Charles II twice took refuge in Jersey, first as Prince of Wales and then as exiled King of England. The Island's loyalty was rewarded when King Charles gave Smith's Island and some neighbouring islets off Virginia to Sir George Carteret with permission to settle. Sir George renamed them New Jersey. The original venture failed but a grant from the Duke of York in 1664 gave Carteret, Lord of the Manor of St Ouen, joint ownership of the territory now known as New Jersey. Enjoy

I wonder if they left any radio equipment in the place, just to give that bit of authenticity, I would be very interested in this as I am a radio ham. Not a practicing one at the moment, all my radios are packed away in boxes. I put them away when we refurbed the kitchen and my den and have not got them down again yet. Excellent capture of the old pill box, my brother has loads of photos of the various gun emplacements and the underground hospital. He spent quite some time exploring the island when he lived there, I know I've mentioned him before, he used to work for heulins transport or something like that. He started off on the tomatoes run though. Superb work and a great narrative. Bravo!!!!!

Sadly it would appear not Jeff, I have just checked a site that has 15 photos of the interior and it all looks very modern other than the structure itself. Huelin Renouf is likely to be the place your brother worked. Take care Susan
