Description

Datura (Jimson Weed) was used in days of old for it's hallucinogenic properties. I grow it every year because I think it's quite cool and beautiful. Wikipedia calls it "Poor Mans Acid".

I like this shot! Devil's Trumpet...- funny,we call it Angel's Trumpet (at least the domesticated ones with huge flowers; also poisonous). For reasons not detailed here, I wouldn't recommend consuming it for men above 50. Seeds, but also other parts of the plant contain scopolamine and atropine, blockers of the parasympathetic system.

I grow it as well. The spirals of the opening flowers are really more beautiful to me then after they open. This is an amazing capture that really highlights the beauty. There is a wonderful story about a company of soldiers in the revolutionary army who entered a New England village hungry and tired. The villagers hid their food from the soldiers because, in war, there was little food to feed the inhabitants. So the soldiers had to scrounge the area for food. They found the seeds of datura and thought they looked like something to add to the stew the cook was making. It was added. The town was turned upside down for several days with "drunken" men acting in a very bazaar manner. For over a week there were 2 or 3 soldiers, in particular, who had to be physically restrained after they appeared to be "going out of their minds." It was such an outstanding occurrance that word leaked out and it was written up in newspapers and documented by the military who had to eventually rush in and pull the crazy soldiers out and replace them with new men. Let that be a lesson to all...don't make stew with datura! LOL
