Don McLean seemed obsessed with the death of Buddy Holly and, later, with the murder of JFK. Thus began his spiraling dark musical inspirations. In these lyrics it appears that he, at least, maintains a belief in the illusion of love. I must respect that he lacks my overriding cynicism about that. Excellent image Robin.
