Description

Tufa is the name for an unusual geological form of calcite rock. This tower, in front of the majestic Sierra Nevada is one of many in Mono Lake. Mono Lake is in a geologically active area at the north end of the Mono-Inyo Crater volcanic chain of the Long Valley Caldera. The geological activity is caused by faulting at the base of the Sierra Nevada, and is associated with the crustal stretching of the Basin and Range Province. On my way a few years ago, to Yosemite trough Death Valley, I stayed for the night at June Lake to visit next day this natural fenomena. The smell is horrible, the flies grubby, the mud slippery , but the view is outstanding surreal! And I am very honored with the selection for the Last Week in the Gallery Feature with my photograph of `Paint mill The Cat` posted a week ago, thanks!! Have a great fantastic day and thanks for your support and kind comments on my previous postings. Also thanks to everyone who added my work as a favorite. Cornelis

An amazing photo, rock formations can take strange and unusual shapes. Calcite can be a really beautiful mineral. I have had yellow calcite, and light green which was really beautiful! Thanks for sharing this.
