I was in a sci-fi mood so I created this picture. Here you see a lovely alien (her face is blue, that's the clue) who is standing on a platform and looking out at the Tarantula nebula. She is wearing a jet pack and is ready to go for a little space flight. The concept of jet packs emerged from science fiction in the 1920s and it was popularised in the 1960s. A Note About the Background Image: The Tarantula nebula is situated 170,000 light-years away in the Large Magellanic Cloud in the Southern sky and is clearly visible to the naked eye as a large milky patch. Astronomers believe that this smallish irregular galaxy is currently going through a violent period in its life. It is orbiting around the Milky Way and has had several close encounters with it. It is believed that the interaction with the Milky Way has caused an episode of energetic star formation – part of which is visible as the Tarantula Nebula.
