Description
Name, History and Origin
Passionflower (Passiflora incarnata) is a creeping perennial vine with white, purple-tinged flowers and orange berries that grows to a height of up to 30 ft (9 m).
The name "Passionflower" as one would think does not mean love flowers, but it refers to the Passion of the Christ on the cross. The corona of these exotic flowers is formed by 72 radial filaments which is said to represent the crown made up of thorns. The ten faithful apostles are said to be shown as the ten sepals and petals. The three nails are represented as the three stigmata present at the top. The five anthers which are present in a lower position represent the five wounds.
Species like Passiflora incarnata are said to have a long history of usage of their products by people of Native America, especially North America. In the central and south America other species like Passiflora edulis were used. With the exception of the continents of Europe and Antarctica, the family Passifloraceae is found to exist worldwide.
